So as I have done for every country that I’ve visited, I have written a post on my thoughts of the country as related to Canada. Kenya I have let sit with me for a little bit as it was not quite what I expected and my feelings over it were mixed.
Certainly from the standpoint of people, for the most part, despite their less comfortable lives than ours, they appear happier in many cases. As a white person though, one’s freedom is not as evident, that is the freedom to walk around and explore the place. I was unable to exercise and roam about taking pictures as I would have desired. I did see some other groups of foreigners taking pictures but they were in groups and my instinct was not giving me a sense of having such freedom.
The wildlife in the parks is spectacular, but I did not see much wildlife outside of those areas. Nairobi itself was a very busy and somewhat congested city. There were only a few places that felt completed from an infrastructure standpoint.
Kenya is a fairly flat geography but there is the Great Rift Valley and there were certainly more mountains as I headed south. Lamu Island was also an interesting place. Cost wise – depending on what you do and how you do it – is not necessarily cheap despite the low cost of living of Africans. Prices for foreigners are always higher.
I would like to visit other parts of Africa as I was told by this one French girl who just came back from Ethiopia that it was very different and less affected by tourism. Also I have heard Tanzania and South Africa to be nice.
Africa is a very different place than Canada and I can’t draw very many similarities or fairly even make comparisons. It is a very different world with a different way of being. The people are proud and resourceful. Worth visiting in any lifetime.
Such a lot to see and remember – how lucky you are.
