Every year on Gabriola, the Lion’s Club presents Concert on the Green. Essentially, the gradual slope to the side of the Gabriola Golf Course get’s turned into an open air concert. Food, Silent Auction, Car show, Beer Garden, Children’s face painting – all the trappings of a perfect afternoon out. And every year it always seems to have spectacular weather. And this year was no different – although the haze from the wildfires did mute the temperature a bit which is probably a good thing because it was over 30C in anycase.
This year I offered to volunteer to help in the food tent. That was fun actually but you did sort of want everyone to stop eating so that I could go watch some of the concert. I saw snips and bits but I heard it all and it was excellent. But I will get to that in a moment.
So I got there at 3 pm. Music set to start at 5 pm with the music of Neil Young by Roger Potter followed by a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. I had no idea this was going to be the busiest year yet.
So I kept taking pictures of the hill filling up. Anyway, Roger Potter was really good – better than Neil Young actually. Just a guy and his guitar. Here is a little snip of him singing:

At the peak, when Fleetwood Mac tribute band came on and people were gobbling up hamburgers and hot dogs faster than we could make them, and the drink line-up started extending past the ticket sales, the hill was packed!
And it didn’t take long until the area infront of the stage was full of people dancing. One of the best things about the Concert on the Green, is that it pretty much attracts loads of Gabriolans and visitors. So it was a great opportunity for me to see friends and acquaintances that I had not seen in 7 years. Here’s a snippet of the Fleetwood Mac band – and sorry the video is so shaky – I was dancing 🙂
So all in all – an excellent day, great entertainment and great friends. All done Gabriola style – no pretension and just a lot of fun. A place where you can be just who you are.
