Owned by a New Zealand family who make their home in Fiji, Bamboo is the most affordable hostel in Fiji. As Henry, the son, said “we wanted to find a property where we could charge $15FJD/night for a bed”. They have owned the hostel for 4 months. The first month there were 5 people, the second month 10 people, the third month 20 people and this month it is full everynight.
Bamboo is good fun. Breakfast is included and the lunch costs $5 FJD and the dinner is $8 FJD. One FJD costs $0.60 CAD. So that is pretty good. And the food is lovely and the people are so kind. “Sara Sara” they call me every time they see me. As the father, Richard says, “It is important to make a place fun to work at and our employees come to work because they genuinely like working here because we make it fun for them.” And that I can attest to. They use a more modern style of management where everyone has a vested interest in a place being fun, attractive and desirable to stay at because the moral is high and the employees get to have fun as well as do their work.
Bamboo doesn’t have a website as they have been doing well enough by word of mouth. You can find them in a search of hostels on www.hostels.com for Nadi, Fiji. It comes up as http://www.hostels.com/hosteldetails.php/HostelNumber.45351 I am happy to promote them, because given the number of hostels I have experienced in my life, I like to help promote those who deserve it. Friendly, relaxed, affordable and a great location to boot.
This is actually their second venture. Their first venture is an eco resort called Maqai Beach, www.maqai.com, on Qamea Island in the lesser known part of the northern islands of Fiji, just a hop skip and a jump from Taveuni. Had I known about this place first before arriving in Fiji, I likely would have gone there to spend my entire time. More remote but spectacularly beautiful, ecofriendly as possible with so much to explore and do. This is the kind of place you come and settle down to write a book or something like that. Little distraction and surrounded by the best of Mother Nature. Hey now that’s an idea. Perhaps that is where I shall go after my world travels.
K. Enough of the promo, but I just had to do it. Highly recommend that if you want to make your Fiji trip extremely affordable and stay in a fun family-like atmosphere, Bamboo is where you go!
sounds like a gem of a place!
I love affordable gems to boot!
