Bigger Is NOT Better

I know it's not a watermelon but I didn't have a picture of one. You'll just have to take my word for it.

Contrary to North American belief. remember when our watermelons had seeds. Remember the seed spitting contests. Now our watermelons are these big gargantuum (sp?) things devoid of seeds. We think this is grand, we think we are getting a great deal.

Well here in the tropics, where watermelons can be grown year round, and I am sure they could be left to grow as large as a house, they are not. Their average size that I have seen is about the size of two acorn squash that you would find in our supermarkets.

The flesh is a deeper red and replete with young seeds. You can even eat the seeds because they are not old and hard. So who cares about the seeds. And those watermelon are oh so sweet and tasty. Not the tasteless pale red seedless mulch of our oversized ones.

I guess Monsanto has not invaded Fiji just yet.
