Is It Against The Law …

My dorm room at Beachouse which was quite nice except for the noisy human kritters

… to murder young partying nubile twenty-somethings?

O.k.  One of the downfalls of staying in dorms is dealing with the ‘younguns’.  The ones that don’t quite have the maturity or sensitivity to know when their actions are selfish and invasive to others.

So I am at the Fiji Beachouse Resort (please see other post for review) staying in a dorm.  I have been put in a potential 6 bedroom dorm that is mostly emptly but I am sharing it with a couple.  They are quite quiet and nice.  This dorm is part of a building that houses 8 such dorm rooms – so for a total of at least 48 individuals.  It is not full.  THANK GOD.

The building that houses multiple dorm rooms

So I head to bed fairly early tired from a so-so sleep the night before at the Bamboo.  Finally sleeping probably by about 11 pm, my roomies come in the room, not having known I would be there and their abrupt entry wakes me out of my sleep.  Not to worry, back to sleep I go.

Then at what was likely midnight or 1 am, I hadn’t the energy to find a watch, commotion breaks out outside the door.  Well, the young backpackers, all a little inebriated and fueled by hormones, have returned from swimming in the ocean and the pool.  They are back and forth throughout the building, yelling, slamming doors, male and female alike.

I reach for my earplugs but they have limited success.  At one point I thought of getting out of bed and letting them know what I thought.  I even heard one failed attempt from a peer to request they quiet it down, but the response from some guy was “nah, they can sleep in in the morning.”  Well I was tempted then to get up and tell him what I thought about him deciding my sleeping habits, but when you are tired and it is that time of night, you just really can’t find the energy to do much let alone make a decision about your actions.  So ultimately, my sleep was not the best.

But just to be clear, this is not always the case and is actually quite unusual.  One of the elements that lent itself to this of course is that the dorm itself was a separate building away from management and staff so no one would have really heard the noise.  Just us.  I could have gotten up but part of me thought, “ah I don’t want to be the crotchety 40 something that these young kids look at like – what a crabby old lady she is!”  Besides, I was there once too, although I think I had a bit more respect for others.  But mix booze and hormones and this can be the result.

But the room and the washrooms were otherwise clean and the resort was idyllic.  So really I have little to complain about.  So I guess I will just let sleeping dogs lie.
