Meanderings about Charlie Sheen …

Rockface #2: Profile, small eye, BIG nose, not much of a mouth. Do you see it?

O.K.  Maybe this is just an excuse to post some of my non-descript oddball photos.  But I have been following with a bit of awe and fascination the public displays by Mr. Charlie Sheen.  I know on quick deduction most people would call him a trainwreck and say he is losing it.  Well I don’t really know who we are to judge.  Clearly the man is working on a plane that the mass majority cannot relate to.  This I can empathise with as I have often said I would pity anyone who would have to spend a day in my head since it usually has 4 or 5 conversations going on at once and at high speed to boot.

The inner workings of my brain!

So I can understand some of the things he says.  Perhaps for years he has had to tone down his natural persona in order to “fit in” with the masses and not freak people out.  Maybe he is just now saying, “screw it, I am just going to be myself.”  I don’t know, and the fact of the matter is that no one knows because no one is inside his head except for him.  Yes, he definitely does not seem to care too much about his health given that he chain smokes and he has injested copious quantities of most mood altering substances known to man.  But again, how he wants to treat his body is his choice.  In all honesty, any sort of “abuse” if we are going to label it, when it comes to substances and behaviour, is only a problem when it hurts other people.  This is where he seems to be failing.

Take the likes of Robin Williams and the late George Carlin.  These men are clearly geniuses and their minds work on levels and at speeds that can leave you breathless.  They have insights into humanity, life,  human behaviour that are profound, truthful and revealing.  They both struggled with the use of substances and who knows about their personal life.   It can be overwhelming to have such awareness and attentiveness to details of such folly as to remain sane and is it surprising that individuals whose brains work a little differently than the masses seek substances or behaviours that may result in them escaping, if only temporarily, the workings of their minds?  We do not live in or experience their brains, and no one ultimately knows but themselves.  However, when your actions affect others, then you are not dealing too intelligently with your gifts.  So given that Mr. Sheen’s actions affect his kids, his exes, his family and co-workers, here he is just being a mite selfish, I would say.

So as I have mentioned in the case of Charlie Sheen, it is his children, his exes, his family and his co-workers who are suffering in the latest of his episodes of mania.  This is where he is not acting very intelligently.  Who really knows what his drivers are and who knows what the ultimate outcome will be.  Only time will tell.

I think however that it behooves us not too label and judge the man.  Who are we to say that because he does not think or function on the level of the mass populous of the world that he is wrong and we are right?  He is however, likely suffering from a degree of self worship that is starting to become insipid and over the top.  Give it up dude.  Carry on quietly, it is much more impressive.

Anyway, just had to get that off my chest.
