Ohhhhh – Oamaru

The Old Victorian/Edwardian Historical District

Me luvs me some Oamaru.  Well I am a sucker for old buildings.  Not old in the eyes of Europe, but old New World.  Canada pales next to New Zealand in protecting and celebrating its history.  The number of towns I have been to now here where they are protecting old building and whole neighbourhoods and showcasing that history.  It is just beautiful.  I can’t get enough of it of course.  It is escapism to me.  Just looking at those building and knowing that whole lives and activities have intertwined with their existence.  To me it is so spellbinding.

The Empire Backpackers Hostel - my place

Even my hostel is an historical building.  It has been the best hostel yet.  Private room for $35CAD/night.  The hostel was quiet and solid.   I slept like a baby.  It was excellent.  The manager was this lovely woman who sincerely cared about our welfare – she kept saying “I want to make sure my children are alright!”  It was so sweet.  Once again, tonnes of Germans.  What is it with that – don’t they like being at home?

So this town is also right on the ocean and is home to two colonies of penguins you can see at night.  I didn’t go see them though because they charge you $25 to watch them come home onto shore at night.  Would rather use that money for eating.  The yellow-eyed penguins are about 30 minutes walk from town and come up one at a time.  Last night I went to the Opera House instead and saw Tutus on Tour.  I had not seen live ballet in a long time, and it was quite enjoyable.

My hostel at the far left next to two other historical buildings. Kinda dwarfed eh?

Yup - the Opera House

So anyway, I have decided I am going to change my blogging style.  Stay tuned for more info.  Leaving for Dunedin in a couple of hours.  Bright and sunny.  It is tough this life I lead.
