Beaches and Beaches and More Beaches

A view of Ballina from a lookout

Australia is definitely a land of beaches.  Of almost the same land size as Canada, and the same population, the country bears other similarities.  As most of Canada’s population hovers around the border with the States, Australia’s population hovers around the coasts and the beaches.  Can you blame them.  Miles upon miles, actually one should say, kilometres upon kilometres of beaches (they are fully metric).  Gorgeous beaches, surf beaches, kite surfing beaches, warm water, clear blue warm water.

Is it a wonder that Australia produces so many good swimmers.  Add to that that for the most part, they swim all year long.  Not necessarily in the waters but certainly they don’t have winter like Canada does.  People also assume the country is smaller likely because it is an island and continent in itself.  The only one like it.  People have said to me, “Hey aren’t you going to go to Perth or get to Darwin?”  Well given that those are both at different ends of the country that would be like me trying to get to Vancouver and then “hop” over to Ottawa afterwards.  Nah, even a month in Australia is not enough.  That is why people often come here for a year to work.

Its geography, climate and people are all amazing.  But I will be covering that in more depth in my Australian Comparative post coming soon.  Less than a week left here and then off to Malaysia!
