So wandering the shopping district on Saturday I decided to take out some money at an ATM. I always check that the machine has a PLUS icon which means it will accept my card. So I go to a major National bank – CIMB – and ask for 1000 ringit. Well the machine whirrs away and nothing is happening so I cancel and try for a lesser amount. It does the same thing but this time I wait and it eventually gives me back my card but nothing. No money So I go to the teller and he says to try an International bank which I do and succeed in getting money. So I am checking my bank account the next morning and lo and behold but the other two amounts have been taken out of my account.
So needless to say I am pissed off and am now having fun trying to work with my bank long distance to try and get my money back. If I do not well expensive lesson learned and a terrible waste of money. But I am hoping I will get it back even though it may take up to 65 days. It just really makes me angry.
UPDATE: So checked my bank account today as I was speaking with a German tourist and she said the same thing happened to her but then in a couple of days the money was put back and the transaction reversed. So the same thing seems to have happened — at least those transactions just totally disappeared. I spoke to RBC today and they said that that can happen because of the time delay that the system registers something before it is verified. Man – I thought computers were supposed to make things easier!
Strangely enough I had a similar thing happen to me at a machine , everything seemed to work o.k. but no money came out so I t ried canceling it and trying again but the same thing happened and like you I find out that it has been deducted from my bank – it was an evening and the bank was closed so have been unable to do anything about it – fortunately it was not for very much money as I never carry cash as I always use my credit card – just needed a few dollars for coffee or such.
I wish it was just coffee money but unfortunately it was about 2/3 of what I budgetted for Malaysia. Hopefully it isn’t a global scam thing that the bank can’t help me with. I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed. It would be nice to know a way to stop it once you suspect it is happening since just pushing cancel doesn’t do it.
Grrrrrrrr!!!
That is terrible, Sara – I hope there is a chance that you will get it back. By the way do you want me to send you money for your birthday?
Think we`ve covered the birthday and money thing Mum- not possible.
