I didn’t really get as much out of Langkawi as I had hoped. When I planned to spend 7 days on the northern island I had envisioned exploring the whole place. But I guess by the time I arrived, I was a little burnt out from being touristy from KL. Also my accommodation, as lovely as it was, was about a 15 minute walk from the beaches and the stores. Now that is really nothing, but when you have to do that walk in oppressive heat with blazing sun and no wind, it becomes a little more thought provoking.

Moreso in KL but also in Langkawi you would often find the side walks without their grating covers for the sewers. One Malaysian acquaintance told me that they get stolen because they are metal. You certainly wouldn't want to fall down these holes!
I guess combine that with me getting sick and not wanting to be far from a toilet, getting a wee bit sunburned and only being able to get so far on foot, I failed to do much exploring. I had thought of getting a scooter but I was a little nervous riding on the roads and also the thought of sitting on the black seat in the sun with a helmut also was not appealing. I guess the bottom line, is that I just got lazy. But that was o.k. because it gave me down time and thinking time. I did watch the Royal Wedding as well and arrived their on my birthday so there were some other fun elements of the stay. But I know there is some amazing rainforest that I didn’t get to and mangrove forests and such that would have been nice. Ah well, sometimes you just hit a wall.
But during that sitting and pondering time, I did come across this good book by Bruce Northam called Globetrotting. One of many good quotes I found in there is this one: “during your travels it is always important to remember, that where something ends, something else begins.” And that is what I think about the Langkawi experience. It was what it was and maybe it just wasn’t for me. But I did meet some great people, saw more of the earth and got some more R&R and you can’t complain about that!
