Me Love Melaka!

The entrance to my hostel in Melaka - Jalan Jalan - meaning walkabout

Melaka is extra special.  This is an amazing town filled with history and diversity.  I am staying in this great hostel recommended to me by a girl who used to live on Gabriola but now lives here.  It was a great recommendation.  Of all the hostels I have stayed in, except for the first one in Dunedin, this is the next best.  The room is exceptionally clean and comfortable.  No bugs and still in tropical hot country.  It is situated in the heart of a Chinese district of sorts.  But in truth, Melaka is made up of Malay, Chinese and Indian with influences of the Portuguese, Dutch and British, so there is quite the unique mix and match.

My room at Jalan Jalan

Sam, the owner of the hostel, is a wonderful smiling man.  His assistant Lee, from Britain original, is a hoot.  As soon a I arrived Lee said, “ah, so the rest of our flock has arrived.  We are going for dinner in 5 minutes are you coming.”  Such a wonderful welcome.  Of course I was going.  So a whole bunch of us went off for dinner.

A new group of friends. At the end starting with the glasses is Lee, Sarah, - cannot remember his name, David, and Nora

Although some of the new acquantances were only with us for that night, Lee, Sarah, David and Nora have been fun to hang around with.  Eating out is very affordable.  You don’t bother to buy groceries.  Here I had chicken tandoori and garlic naan plus a big bottle of water and pineapple juice all for 12 ringit or $4 CAD.  And the food was excellent.

Cute little dried anchovies - kind of like chips - salty but yummy

Nice face - Me sulking because I am the last one to receive my food.

Anyway, despite being the last to be served (food excellent – service a bit confused) I was fully satisfied by the end.  So after great company and a full meal, we headed back, and me being exhausted from an active day of hiking, yoga, traveling and now eating, went back to the hostel for some sleep.

Yum - my dinner finally arrives
