Walked about 20 km yesterday and my poor feet just don’t get a break. Need to get outside soon to do some more walking and viewing of the ruins. They really are spectacular. I did see the Colosseum and Forum when I was in Italy in 1985 but they have done so much more excavating and preparing the ruins for the public to keep viewing without wrecking, it has changed so much since then even. There are new discoveries since their work in the late 90s and 2000s. So it is like seeing it fresh again. It really does just leave you speechless.
Well I guess it doesn’t actually leave me speechless since I could just go on and on about it. I can’t get enough of these sorts of sites. I love history and I love ancient ruins. I don’t know why. But I like to try and imagine living in that time and thinking about people walking throughout these ruins when they were actually part of daily life.
It was a hot day. I have to get back out there too as I didn’t see it all. Luckily the admission price covers it all and is good for 24 hours. Rome is beautiful. I thought in remembing it and after the lovely quaint places of Lecce and Matera that it would just be a big ol’ city, but aside from being a big ol’ city it is still exceptional. I remember some people saying they like Istanbul better since it too is such a historic city, but they are different and not really comparable I don’t think. Italy manages its ruins differently than Turkey and I think they are doing an excellent job making their viewing available to the public but at the same time working hard to protect them so that they will be forever here.
Anyway, I will write more later but for now, after getting in this morning at 4 am, and after only 5 hours sleep, I must get moving again for my last day in Rome. So gotta shower and get outside. Later. Stay tuned for more.
It looks amazing – wish I had got to Rome on my visit to Italy!!
When did you go to Italy?
