I landed in Bari, Italy at about 8 pm on June 12th. What day was that? I think that was Sunday. Oh yes, it was – it is all becoming such a blur. In anycase, I didn’t really have much time in Bari. I found my hostel, which really shouldn’t be being a hostel at the moment because they are in the middle of renovations and it is a bit hectic. But it was a bed so I am not complaining. I didn’t really wonder Bari very much only the space that is covered from the port to the train station and to the hostel. Although wildly enough I did encounter some religious holiday they were having as there was quite the procession with people in costumes and even a donkey and horse and carriage slowly making its way down the pedestrian street. This happened as I was madly trying to find a place to eat since I had not eaten all day.
So I found a couple of restaurants, or pizzerias, as they all seemed to be called. They were all very busy and hectic. I finally decided on one and it became a comedy of me being forgotten. They gave me a table right beside a very large party which included children, who seemed to have full reign to play and scream. The waiters were running back and forth madly. After about 10 minutes one waiter brought me a half glass of champagne as some sort of apology but still my order had not been taken. After another 10 minutes a very harried girl finally came and took my order. Then I sat. Luckily I had my kindle to read.
At one point the host brought me my bill and I still had not received my water or pizza. I looked at the bill and put it back down, somewhat amused, very hungry and quite tired. Another waiter spoke to him and he retrieved the bill. Obviously recognizing the mistakes. Then another table that had arrived about 20 minutes after me got their pizzas and I had only received water. I must have looked quite distressed because suddenly one waiter was speaking intensely to my female waiter. There was some kerfuffle and the host apologized to me and said my food would be up soon. And the pizza did arrive, probably about 45 minutes into me arriving. But I really didn’t care, they were busy and I was pretty inconsequential. But I happily ate it, paid my bill and then left. What a zoo.
I also met during my trek from the port to the train station, a younger girl from Canada – Jenn. She was great and was really interested in my story saying that I should meet her Aunt if I am back in Vancouver again because I remind her of her Aunt and she thinks we would have a blast getting together. If you read this particular post Jenn – hi!!! Anyway, other posts to add now, as I am terribly behind.
