Another site recommended by Lottie was Skagen. This is an open air museum on 75 acres (or perhaps that was hectares). It was established in 1891. Essentially examples of the various buildings and lifestyle as they existed throughout Sweden over the centuries have been moved and recreated there. It is a lovely way to spend the afternoon.
It actually was not too different from Pioneer Village in Toronto but of course the buildings and the history is older. Again I find these sorts of things quite fascinating. What I really like though is the Swedish style. It is elegantly simple and proud. They are and have been a very resourceful people whose skills and style have been shaped by their climate. Short intense summers followed by longer cold winters.
Scandanavia is the land where runes originated which I find quite compelling. Of course their history includes the vikings which must be in my lineage. Their’s a history where men and women were more equal compared to other cultures. Even in the 1600 women would sell their crafts and wares as entrepreneurs alongside men to make money. From what I could tell as well, the chores were split pretty evenly. Men as well created crafts. This is quite different to other cultures where it seems women did the bulk of everything yet still did not have any freedom but were basically slaves.
You are certainly finding a lot of history – so very interesting.
Well I do seek the history out afterall.
Hey Ho! Finally reading a blog page again!! Sweden and surrounding countries are something that totally eludes me. I simply know nothing about them.
Hmmmmm…..
Yes – I don’t know alot about their history but our viking heritage can be found here and I can relate to that …
