Blue Blue Lagoon

Eat it up sucker - this is my experience!

K, it’s blue, as in the colour, and I’m blue, as in the mood, because it is the end of my current journey.  I hate when good things come to an end.  But really it is the beginning of something even better.  So there you go.

The amazing lagoon - the public pools accessed by the people, and behind that are those additional pools unavailable for use

So anyway, I went to the Blue Lagoon, a must, on my way to the airport.  And I am so glad I went in the morning because as I was leaving there was a whole cruise ship worth of the 60+ crowd arriving.  It had been perfect when I got there.  Not busy at all.  But with the 6 busloads arriving as I was leaving I can just imagining the change in the place.  So a piece of advice – get there early in the morning.

Steam rises as we approach the Blue Lagoon

But this place was lovely.  This geothermal spa’s water temperature is 37 – 39C and the lagoon holds six million litres of geothermal seawater which is renewed every 40 hours.  Floating in this mineral-rich water close to the proximity of the actual extraordinary environment surrounded by the natural elements is a unique experience.

The amazing beautiful blue pools

Yes it is a tourist trap but so be it.  You won’t find this anywhere else.  And on a little island of only 320,000 people trying to recover from being let to go bankrupt in a world where everywhere else is buoyed up, good for them.  It is beautiful.  The set up is beautiful.  The water is hot and healing.  It is well presented and put together.  I quite enjoyed it.

The seawater originates 2000 metres beneath the ground where it is at a temperature of 240C and the pressure is 36 times the pressure on the earth’s surface.  When it comes into contact with the cooling magmatic intrusions, it captures the earth’s minerals, resulting in a unique natural source known for its healing powers.

The path to the baths

Even the Blue Lagoon products are lovely, expensive, but lovely.  I wish I could just buy them all up.  I bought a couple of samples and this being my last moments of travel, I have been having some fun with my spending having guarded it closely for almost 8 months.

Another shot of the hot steaming lagoon

And as I was sitting in a bus on the way to the airport, I sat beside an Irish man currently living in London, but previously in Toronto, and we got on the topic of contract work, specializing in diversity and getting rid of material objects.  It was so refreshing to find yet another person who totally gets where I am coming from.  Who understands my drive and desire to make travelling a lifestyle instead of a once in a while occurrence.  Someone who also understands why stuff just weighs you down and makes you feel heavy.

The moss covered lava beds

So here I sit in the airport.  I will be posting this after my actually writing since I am having trouble loading the photos.  I also am downloading the youtube video that you will have already seen by this point in the post.

Speaking of youtube, it is so bizarre how they seem to target my videos for copyright infringement yet other people have very similar videos on youtube and don’t get touched at all.  And these are not great videos.  They are usually only about a minute and are not of great quality.  You’d think the people complaining would see it as free marketing instead of infringement.  Please, it barely competes with the real product.

Anyway, I am digressing.  So here I sit, about to board the plane for Toronto.  A quick 4 or 5 month rendezvous back in Canada whilst I figure out my next steps, make some money and prepare to head out again.  I can do this.  I can figure out how to make this a lifestyle.  Not spending the way I have in the last month – I did that for fun – but travelling, exploring, seeing the world.

If it was back in medieval times or pre-Industrial times, I would be an explorer for sure.  So I am just doing it now in modern times.  Gotta love it.  Keep posted baby.
