Why was it easier moving from other places knowing I would not return? Probably because all my stuff came with me. Probably because I remained in the same province and didn’t have to make the hard decisions of what to keep and not. How does one continue to accumulate stuff when they keep getting rid of stuff and moving?
I took three large garbage bags of clothes to the second hand store since after living with only a backpack’s worth of clothing for 8 months, it certainly makes you realize how little clothing you actually need. I think the harder part is that since Canada has 4 seasons you do need a wider range of clothing and certainly winter clothing is a lot more bulky than summer clothing. You think of the amount of clothing people in Africa have and it really makes you wonder how we have become such clothes hounds.
So aside from the challenge of dealing with stuff, I have been having a really good time but busy time seeing all my friends and family. After an amazing afternoon/evening with my friend Robin and her partner Jim to which Jude and her friend Nano joined us, my sister Jill and her hubby Jerry came down to pick up my dining table. I dragged them and Jude and Nano out to the Skol – my old hang – for some Karaoke. Note to self – do not try to sing James Blunt’s song “Your Beautiful” live again!
The whole day was amazing. So many friends. Such fun. The next morning Jude made us these awesome low fat high fibre pancakes. So a good follow-up to a bit of a debaucherous evening. It is hard trying to see everyone here on this island before I leave and I am giving up trying to do that. I don’t know when I will next be in BC so I do want to say bye to as many people as I can but given that I don’t even know where I will be in six months it is hard for me to tell people when I might see them again.
And you know what, for as big as the world is, it is also pretty small. And you do stay in touch with people where it works and it makes sense. Friends are seasonal, geographical or forever. Only time can tell.
Sara, here are some quotes on long distance friendships: (hope you’ll like them)
Where we love is home…home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts. – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
Time is the longest distance between two places. – Tennessee Williams.
We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere. – Tim McGraw
The return makes one love the farewell . – Alfred De Musset.
Touche!

Thank you, ladies. I also thought they were good, which is why I had to share them. 🙂 Glad that you enjoyed them…..there are more where those came from. HAHAHA
