Languishing in London

Walking towards Sloane Square - the ritzy part of London

So I have been spending a significant amount of time this time in London.  I got back here and stayed in central London of three nights before heading to my house sit.  Given the engineering works they are doing on the Tube however, I found the main stop closest to my accommodation to be closed down last weekend for the entire time I was there.

Yes ... a silver car

Sadly I discovered this the hard way when trying to get home to the YMCA at midnight and faced with closed down Tube lines (as they all shut down regardless around midnight – which is a real pain) but also that the three lines servicing Barbican Station – my station – were down all weekend.

Can someone tell me where I might find a phone??

Well I found myself at Baker Station without another tube to take.  So I asked various individuals how to get to Barbican and no one really seemed to want to help me.  As I starting feeling more frantic somewhat stranded in the middle of London at 12:30 am I was told to catch a certain bus but could not find the stop.

Finally, I though that I would just get a cab regardless how expensive it might end up being.  I get in a cab and tell the man where I want to go.  He did not know where I was talking about and told me to get out of his cab as he would not take me it was too far.  I was shocked.  So I got out and I was quite upset by this point.

I phoned my friend Nuno to ask for some help as I was pretty upset but this point.  Well to make a long story short, he told me just to take a cab to his place which was way closer and I could crash there.  This I did, but the cab still cost me 20 pounds, so I can’t imagine how much it would have cost had I had it take me all the way to the YMCA.

The next morning I set out at about 7:30 am.  It took me one and a half hours but tube, bus and walking to finally get there.  Ridiculous.  And it was not that far.  But I quickly figured out what transport I had to take for the rest of the weekend to make life easy again.

So the lesson to be learned here is that London shuts down really early and make sure you know all your possible routes by tube and bus, so you can be sure to get home.  People late at night in London are not very helpful or friendly.
