What a beautiful place. Through a friend I have met a new friend, Jana. I went to Vila Nova de Milfontes for the day to meet her. What a beautiful little coastal town. I guess come the height of summer, this place is packed and the beaches are crowded. But for this day, it was quiet and the beach was wide open for the two of us to enjoy.
Vila Nova de Milfontes is right at the opening of the Mira River which ultimately flows to Odemira, a town I go to quite frequently for shopping and other needs. As such, there can be quite an undertow due to the tidal stream.
The day I was there, the waves out in the open ocean were cresting and crashing making for an exceptional vision. There is always a bit of wind here which is great as far as I am concerned, because then the heat is not so bad. But of course, then you have to watch for getting sunburned as you might not feel the heat so much. But as you warm up, it is perfect for then taking a dip in the ocean. It is an ideal place for Kite Surfing – my brother would like that.
The water was not overly warm. I would guess it was likely only about 16C, but it was refreshing once you jumped in. And my company was exceptional. Such an interesting person. I love that my ability to travel the world has me meeting up with such exceptional people. I also think that you meet people for a reason, you draw like minded people to you. And that is the case here.
Now for a little history. The village dates from the year 1468, founded by the King D. João II. The first inhabitants were prisoners sentenced by minor delicts and fifty years after the village establishment the population was no more than ten families. The village was frequently attacked by pirates and a fortress was built in 1602. The fortress is commonly called Saint Clement’s Castle. This castle is now privately owned so you can’t really tour it.
Locals joke that the town is of the three lies; 1) calling it Vila (village) – On the founding of the “village” there was less than the thousand inhabitants required to claim the state of village; 2) on the word Nova (new) – The estuary has for centuries provided shelter from the Atlantic for fishing fleets so not so new; and 3) De Milfontes (of a thousand fountains or springs) – There has never been a thousand fountains or springs. Kind of quirky eh? But one thing I know is true – I will be back.
