Yup, their pink, and no, they are not mine. I don’t tend to buy pink footware. But it was cold and wet when I was visiting my cousin in Bristol so it was necessary to borrow some footware having only brought clothes and shoes for warmer climes. When will Britain get a summer anyway?
In anycase, decked out with my pink boots, brown leggings and shorts, ready to face the elements, I was a fashion icon! :o) I have never been to Bristol. Nor had I ever met my cousin’s wife Jacqui. In fact I have not seen my cousin for 30 years. And he was not their this time, but I am going back in a couple of weeks to see him anyway.
But Bristol is a lovely little place. Steeped in history it was received royal charter in 1155. It is the 6th most populous city in England with approximately 430,000 people. It is the centre of culture, employment and education in the southwest region. It is built around the River Avon and has a short coastline on the Severn Estuary. People from Bristol are termed Bristolians – that I never knew. Bath is not too far from Bristol, where I went last year and quite loved.
Under Norman rule the town acquired one of the strongest castles in southern England. Sadly I did not get to go see that this time around. But I will do a better tour on my next visit. However I did get to see the very beautiful Bristol Cathedral. Bristol Cathedral is the major example of a “hall church” in Great Britain and one of the finest anywhere in the world. Parts of the church date from 1220 and 1300 – 1330.
Another interesting site is the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The idea of building a bridge across the Avon Gorge originated in 1753, with a bequest in the will of Bristolian merchant William Vick, who left £1,000 invested with instructions that when the interest had accumulated to £10,000, it should be used for the purpose of building a stone bridge between Clifton Down (which was in Gloucestershire, outside the City of Bristol, until the 1830s) and Leigh Woods in Somerset. I passed this on my jog so I did not have my camera with me, next time. The jog by the way, in which I got lost and ended up running for an hour instead.
So I roamed about the main city centre, outfitted in my sporty pink wellies and endured the rain. A neat place to consider. I think though, my one complaint would likely end up being the weather. But isn’t that across the board with Britain anyway?
I just love your borrowed pink boots. Now I know what to give you as a gift……
By the way, the heading of this entry would make a great book title, don’t you think?
Yup – kinda liked that title – I was feeling creative
