Old Castles in France

Details on Le Chateau de Clerans

On my last couple of days in Bergerac, my friends Vonik, Christian and Patricia went with me to a lovely little chateau near some friend’s place.

The Chateau de Clérans, a magical spot and protected 11th century historical monument, is situated in France in the Périgord Pourpre near Bergerac. The chateau is the home of Joris Van Grinsven and is open to the public one weekend in September every year as part of the European Heritage Days.

Modern conveniences adjacent to antiquity

It is under the name of ‘Seigneurs de Clérans’ that the Dutch designer, Joris van Grinsven, works with his team on projects designing and/or decorating private homes, hotels, restaurants and businesses throughout Europe.

Hey, what are Santa's reindeer doing here

Now that I know this, it makes sense.  As we wondered around the amazing ruins, there was modern furniture and art punctuating the property that offered an very interesting juxtaposition.  I loved the hot tub and shower against the ancient wall.  The modern sculptures on the grass.  It was a pretty cool place to figure that they live there.  Of course you would have to have some money to own something like that.

Afterwards, we went next door to friend’s of Vonik’s and Christian’s.  They are an English couple who had been coming to this particular guesthouse for decades and when it became available to purchase, they jumped on it.

"Why greetings good friends, come on in!"

This guesthouse used to be a tower and has been converted.  It too is from the 1100th century.

Entering their place from the other side

I really love these old ruins and old towns in France that have kept and embraced such history.  You can just squint your eyes and imagine you are in a different time.  There is something so special about this particular region too, with its unique medieval villages and quaint little towns.

I highly recommend a visit.  Even just for a day.
